Second accused in UP jewellery store robbery case killed in police encounter

A second accused in the Sultanpur jewellery store robbery case was gunned down in Unnao on Monday in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force.
The encounter took place in the Achalganj police station area of Unnao district.
During the encounter, one accused was injured, while another managed to escape. The injured has been identified as Anuj Pratap Singh, son of Dharamraj Singh, a resident of Janapur village, Mohanganj police station, Amethi district.
The injured was immediately sent to the government hospital for treatment. However, after initial medical care, he was referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Further legal proceedings are underway, with a probe being conducted by the forensic science team and Achalganj police.
On September 5, the Special Task Force (STF) killed another accused, Mangesh Yadav, triggering a political row, with the opposition, including the Samajwadi Party, and the Congress labeling the encounter “fake.”
On August 28, around Rs 1.5 crore worth of jewellery was stolen from a store in the Thatheri Market area of Sultanpur city.
In earlier operations, the police made significant strides in recovering stolen items from the Sultanpur jewellery heist. Acting on a tipoff, they arrested four key suspects: Vivek Singh, Durgesh Singh, Arvind Yadav, and Vinay Shukla. During the operation, authorities recovered 2.25 kilograms of gold, 20 kilograms of silver, and a substantial amount of cash. The mastermind behind the robbery, Vipin Singh, surrendered to the police the day after the crime.
